Assistant Conference and Banqueting Manager

We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Conference & Banqueting Manager to join our fantastic Food & Beverage team here at Old Thorns Hotel. We are looking for someone who is passionate about hospitality and will work well within our great conference & banqueting team, providing guests with excellent service and a great event. This role will mainly consist of looking after our guests attending our events and weddings or using our meeting rooms.

Working as part of our Conference & Banqueting team, you will be expected to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational and communication skills. You will need to be passionate and knowledgeable about food and beverage and be confident in providing guests with the correct choice. The role will give you the opportunity to learn and develop, with the potential to progress within the company. This is a hands on, operational role and will suit someone who likes working with friendly and hardworking people in a hotel setting.

Old Thorns is a four-star resort in Hampshire. The hotel is easily accessible from the A3, and only 30 minutes from the M25 and Portsmouth. Old Thorns offers a wide range of accommodation, conference & function facilities, health club, beauty spa, restaurants & bars, a championship golf course.

As standard, you will work 45h a week on a flexible rota, where weekends will be required.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To have an excellent knowledge of all conference and events facilities, menus, beverages and services available. This is to include the preparation and service.
  • To meet with organisers and clients and ensure the highest standards of professionalism and customer service are achieved at all times.
  • To direct and supervise the activities of conferences and events, ensuring all guests receive high standards of service and their needs met.
  • To ensure conferences and events are carried out according to client contract including room layout, equipment hire, etc.
  • To liaise with the sales department on all matters concerning the smooth operation of all functions.
  • To ensure function sheet requirements are delivered on-time and to the highest possible standards.
  • To arrange bookings, table plans and allocate work to team members.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  • Smart personal presentation and polite and friendly manner
  • Passionate about delivering the highest standards of customer care
  • Excellent standards of spoken English
  • Previous experience is desirable but not essential

Trainee Greenkeeper

Working as a KickStart Trainee Greenkeeper you will work within the Greenkeeping Department. In this role you will assist with the upkeep of the golf course, surrounding areas and hotel grounds. You will undertake hands-on training and gain experience carrying out all the main responsibilities of a Greenkeeper.

You will be training towards duties and responsibilities.

  • to upkeep the hotel grounds as directed by line manager,
  • to put into practice all training and instructions provided by the Head Greenkeeper,
  • to carry out turf maintenance operations associated with the golf course and hotel grounds,
  • to ensure all Health and Safety procedures are adhered to at all times
  • to undertake routine machine maintenance

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has drive and motivation to work in the Hospitality sector. We are looking for an individual who wants to build a successful career within Hotels and/or Greenkeeping

In this role you will be able to learn and develop greenkeeping skills, Golf knowledge, teamwork and communication skills, H&S knowledge, and basic computer user skills among many others.

This role is for a 6-month Kickstart placement, and will be for 25 hours per week.

Our Kickstart programme is an opportunity for young people claiming Universal Credit. You will gain valuable work experience for six months.

To be eligible for the Kickstart programme you will need to be:

  • Currently claiming Universal Credit
  • Be available to work for 25 + hours
  • Be able to undertake a 6-month work placement/training programme

Training Provided:

All new starters will be attending company induction day where they will learn about the Hotel, H&S, the main policies and procedures and benefits. They will also attend a 2h induction to Costumer Service on the day.

New starters will be provided with a buddy for the first two weeks of their employment. The buddy will act as a mentor training them and guiding them through their first weeks at work. The buddy will remain available throughout their employment as a main point of contact and support.

During the first two weeks new starters will be able to do cross training in the relevant departments, allowing them to learn about the overall operation of the hotel.

We will enrol new starters on our online training platform where they will be able to do online training. Topics include, H&S safety, Food Safety, Allergen Awareness, Multiple COVID 19 training's, Effective Teams, Disability Awareness, Guest Service etc.

Weekly 1 to 2 hour training will be provided by the HR team covering topics such as CV writing, interviewing practice, time keeping, teamwork, effective communication among many others.

Contract length: 6 months

Part-time hours: 25 per week
